Curator #166: Angela Desmarais

Hello / Kia ora / Hola

My name is Angela Desmarais (@acrossthebreeze). I am from Auckland, New Zealand and I am 39 years old, although my classmates think I’m 25 which is fine with me. I have travelled extensively, including a decade in Europe; briefly living in the Republic of Ireland, Italy and France before visiting Barcelona, where I met my husband and settled down in Mataró for six years.

I call myself an ESOL teacher but I have been many things in my life; animator, photographer’s assistant, transcriber, office worker, nanny. However, teaching is the thing that stuck. I started out teaching English through art and drama in summer camps throughout Northern Italy and eventually taught English in Barcelona at UPC (@BarcelonaTech), in primary schools and in-house with Merit School (@Merit_School), as well as working throughout Catalonia as a Cambridge ESOL Speaking examiner (@CambridgeEng).

I returned to home to New Zealand in 2012 with my Catalan husband (@gcristofol) and even our Catalan cat (he doesn’t have a twitter account due to a lack of opposable thumbs, but loves tweets of the bird variety). We adore living in this beautiful country but try not to think about its big problem with housing affordability.

Late last year I took a giant leap of faith and quit my job, enrolling in full-time university studies at Massey University’s Albany campus in Auckland (@MasseyUni) to study a Bachelor of Arts with a double major – Linguistics and Spanish. Auckland is quite a big city and this campus is 25 km away from my home, so you’ll be hearing a bit about Auckland’s public transport system during the 3-hour return trip I take each day. I also volunteer my time to supporting wonderful organisations like The Blind Foundation and its Red Puppy Appeal (@BlindNZ), Be My Eyes (@BeMyEyes), Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (@LBCNZ) and regularly make loans through (@Kiva).

I spend weekends procrastinating; avoiding university assignments by meeting friends for coffee, pottering around in the garden or cooking delicious vegetarian meals.

Apart from Auckland’s traffic and housing issues, this week on @catalanvoices I’ll mainly be tweeting about university life, linguistics and New Zealand life in general (but not rugby or hobbits).

Looking forward to connecting with you all.
