My name is Artur Colom Jaén (@ArturColom on twitter). I’m very pleased to be the curator of @Catalanvoices the week of January 18th-24th. I was born and raised in Barcelona, where I currently live. I have been living abroad on many occasions, but always for short periods.
I am a postdoc researcher at the Department of Applied Economics of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (@UAB_info), where I teach on East Asian economies and development. My research is essentially focused on different aspects of economic development in Africa and China. You can find out more at my personal webpage (http://gent.uab.cat/artur_colom).
My main interests, as you will notice through my coming tweets or my past ones with my personal account, include African development, China, environmental issues, global health, natural resources and social inequalities. I’m kind of a heterodox economist. Hope a Catalan voice on these issues will be interesting!
I’m currently preparing a one-month stay in Senegal at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar. I will be carrying research on the effects of private investments and public co-operation programmes from other developing countries such as China, India or Brazil in Senegal. For that purpose I have financial support from the Catalan government SGR programme (Suport de Grups de Recerca). I will be down there during February. I have been many times in Senegal, either teaching or doing research. It will be nice to see again so many friends and colleagues. So my main activity for the coming weeks is to prepare the trip to Senegal. Well, it won’t be the only one, I have to take and mark some three thousand exams, essays and assignments from my beloved students at the UAB ;). And keep on swimming in my scarce free time!
