Curator #40: Marc Jornet

MarcJornetHello and thank you for reading my introducing words. It’s a big pleasure for me to take part in this project, and I’m proud of having the opportunity to talk about my country to foreign people that are interested in our every day life, our culture, our sense of humor..

So let me introduce myself. My name is Marc Jornet Niella, I’m 40 years old. I’m from Terres de l’Ebre, the southern region of Catalonia. To be exact, from Gandesa in the hinterland, near the Franja de Ponent. This is a narrow region close to Catalonia where Catalan is spoken, and where my mother is from, a very beautiful village called Calaceit.

I have three special people in my life, my wife Maijo and our two little boys Pau and Lluc. I think having a family is one of the most important things in the life of a man or woman. You learn to share your life with another person and then, you try to show the children the better way to reach liberty.
Nowadays, I work as a librarian in the Library of Roquetes “Mercè Lleixà”, and during this week I’ll try to explain Catalonia from the point of view of a librarian.

But before working there, I studied History at Universitat de Barcelona, and for a few years I worked as an archaeologist, which influenced me a lot in my point of view of the political situation in Catalonia. A long-term perspective is better to understand the changes.
And another of my passions is wine. My father has a white Grenache vineyard, a typical variety of grape from the Gandesa area, and I have been able to learn all the process of wine making from the beginning.

Now, in the library of Roquetes I work with two women, Begonya and Judit (libraries are a women’s world) and I usually prepare activities for children, like storytelling, workshop, etc. One of the things I like the most is telling stories to children, I make different voices for each character and I always try to make children love books.

All those things will help me to show you the vision of my everyday life as a Catalan librarian. Let’s start reading this book!
